Introduction to The GIMP

The GIMP, or in more technical terms the GNU Image Manipulation Program, is a computer-graphic/art program that is somewhat comparable to Photoshop. Many Team Blaze artists are users of it - including TBL_Luis himself - and users such as TBG_GlaceonTrainer are former users of it. This guide, though brief, will attempt to answer the questions you may have about this program.

Where do I download GIMP?

GIMP, though originally made for Unix/Linux, has branched out for usage for many different operating systems. Linux will usually come with it installed right away, so Linux users don't have to download it. As for everybody else, there are certain links you can follow to get it. Unix users can go here for a list of download-ready versions; Windows users should go to this link to download the program; and Mac OSX users would click here to get it.

How do I use GIMP?

Obviously, none of us here at Team Blaze can sit here and explain every little detail to you. So, I suggest browsing around looking for tutorials. If you click here or here, you'll find some highly recommended guides.

Where do I get brushes and fonts to use on GIMP?

Ah, yes, brushes. Brushes, though common in a lot of places, can usually be found on DeviantART. Just search "GIMP Brushes" in the bar, and you'll be brought to a page full of results. As for fonts, DaFont is the place to go.

I have the brushes/fonts, now how do I use them?

Actually, doing this is very simple once you understand how. First, you must preform the obvious by unzipping the folder that contains the files, and then coping them all. Once you have done that, you will have to make your way to the GIMP file in your computer; once you have, open it up in one swift, double-click motion. From there it's pretty obvious what to do. Keep navigating around until you find the folders "Brushes" and "Fonts". If you are installing a brush, go right in that folder and paste those files in; the same goes for fonts, except with the Font folder. Now, just simply restart GIMP and they should be working just fine!

I have a question/problem, where can I go?

Well, the simple solution is to go to GIMP's F&Q Page to see if it's answered there. If not, you can always contact us here at Team Blaze!

If I need help on something automatically, where can I go?

Well, believe it or not, GIMP's website has a nifty list of official IRC channels with people that I'm sure would be willing to help! Click here to find the IRC channel best suiting your current question or problem. Another solution is going to GIMPtalk's Forum. They are quite active, and can be pretty useful.

Any Last Advice?

The advice is simple: keep trying. Your graphics may look really bad at first, but so what? Most of ours did. Giving up doesn't help! If you do, however, needs some tips or guidance, feel free to contact TBL_Luis!
